According to the Brennan Center for Justice and NBC News, since the 2020 election, 21 states have passed 33 laws restricting mail voting access. Overall, 22 states have passed 43 such laws since the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder. Additionally, between January 1 and December 7, 2021, at least 19 states passed 34 laws that restrict access to voting, including measures that make mail voting and early voting more difficult, impose harsher voter ID requirements, and increase the likelihood of faulty voter purges. Legislators in 49 states drafted more than 440 restrictive voting bills in the last year, with 34 of them becoming law. Notably, Georgia, Iowa, Florida, and Texas all passed sweeping omnibus election bills with long lists of new and more stringent restrictions. The trend of restrictive voting legislation has been ongoing, and it remains a topic of significant concern for voting rights advocates.
